Gutters have an important function for your home besides making it look more complete. They also funnel water away from your home's windows, foundation, doors and exterior walls, making it more difficult for it to find its way inside. With gutters comes regular maintenance in the form of cleaning them out a few times a year. While this can improve the longevity of the system, it will still likely need to be replaced at some point. Here are a few telltale signs that this time has arrived.

1. Sagging Gutters

The first noticeable sign that you notice that you need new gutters could be the visual one of sagging gutters or ones that are pulling away from your house. If you see this, you can assume that they are full of water because they are not doing their job correctly for some reason. These could vary from the system not draining as it was designed to do, a blockage of debris or that the system is not the right one for your home.

2. Cracking or Splitting Gutters

Even small cracks or the slightest splitting of your gutters is a sign that they need to be replaced. Why? Because it will not take long for those small imperfections to become larger and eventually allow water to affect the foundation, shingles and fascia boards of your home. You will likely need a ladder in order to see this damage.

3. Marks Under Your Gutters

Regularly inspect your gutters on a day when it is not raining and there is at least some sun. If you notice water marks directly under your gutters, they likely need to be replaced. Water marks of this sort are a sign that water is overflowing or leaking from your gutters. Eventually, this water could damage the fascia board and soffit of your home.

4. Water or Mildew Around Your Foundation

Mildew on your foundation or pools of water around it mean that your gutters are not directing the flow of water away from them like they were intended. Without further inspection, it is impossible to know if this is due to something simple, such as debris blocking the gutter, or if your entire guttering system needs to be replaced.
