Whether building a new house or remodeling an older home, you may first consider a floorplan layout that best serves the needs of your family, but certainly also want to assure the exterior of the house is beautiful and appealing to you and your guests. There are few relatively simple ways to upgrade an older home or even add design changes to the blueprints for a new house.
Siding Available by Modern Standards
Modern siding systems are a bit different than what was available even a couple of decades ago. Vinyl siding is generally considered the best value based on expense and performance. Modern systems are available in a number of contours to appear like other types of wood or panel siding, and are available with built in insulation as a means to help the overall energy efficiency of your house. In certain areas, steel siding may be a better option because of its resistance to storm damage. Cedar shakes are traditionally known for their need of ongoing repairs, but modern methods of manufacturing have essentially eliminated such a stereotype as they need much less maintenance than ever before.
Matching Gutters and Shutters
Once you've decide on the siding you prefer, it's time to consider whether you want the accents of shutter and gutters. Gutters, although they aren't absolutely essential, are an important aspect of a home as the direct water where you want it to go instead of draining directly off the roof onto the lawn or shrubbery. Because windows are made of stronger glass now, shutters aren't typically a functioning aspect of the home, but they do add some color and accentuate the lines of your home design.
Adding Gorgeous Doors
Doors are also available in a variety of styles with modern features. Regardless of what style of door you prefer, you'll want it to be installed securely so it functions smoothly and provides security against potential intruders. At the very least, the hardware screws need to reach the structural framework of your house. If you feel a need for even more security, discuss with your contractor methods of strengthening the door and its connection to your house.
