If you are like many homeowners in the Minneapolis and St. Paul areas, you do not really give much thought to the exterior of your home. This is especially true when it comes to those people who have vinyl siding on their homes. After all, with the exception of power washing it every now and then, you expect that your home's vinyl siding is going to be maintenance free. This does not mean, though, that you will never need to have it replaced.

1. Siding that is peeling or chalky in appearance

Inspect your siding for signs that is it peeling in places. You will also want to look for a chalky appearance as well. These are indicative of a breakdown in the materials used in your siding. Often a result of the elements, this breakdown is a natural process. With it comes, however, a compromise in the moisture barrier created by the siding which could expose the structure of your home to unwanted substances.

2. The seams are separating

If you notice that the seams where your siding is joined together are separating, it is a sign that you need to replace it sooner rather than later. While this separation could be caused by faulty installation practices, it is also likely to be due to exposure to the elements as well. Regardless of the reasons, this separation could make it easier for moisture to reach your home and render damage to it.

3. Your siding is buckling or warped

Take a look down the long sides of your siding. Does it look wavy or like it is buckling? This is most often caused by moisture that has reached the boards underneath the siding, causing them to expand and push out against the siding. It is a clear signal that your siding is no longer acting as a barrier of protection against moisture for your home.
